The birth of St John the Baptist we celebrate on Wednesday. He was born as a prophecy and murdered for truth.
Before he ended his career he said: ‘I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal.’ He knew that Jesus, the one he came to announce, who would come after him, must increase while John would decrease.
How appropriate, then, that the length of days begins to shorten from the date of John’s birth until about the time of our Lord’s birth in December when the days begin to lengthen again.
Thus nature itself connects the births of our Saviour and of His herald, who decreased in martyrdom as his Lord increased to win our salvation.
